Carter, Hazel Lois Bagley (1914-1988)

She married Lenieu (“Buddy”) Carter in 1938 and their children are Sanford Len­ieu Carter, who married Dianne Estelle O’Keefe in 1963, and their children are Mary Melissa, Sanford Lenieu Jr., and Laura Stella Carter; Mary Geneva Carter, who married David Stafford Varnedoe, and their children are Hazel Carter and David Stafford Varnedoe Jr., and Donald Maurice Carter, who married Nila Marie Meredith, and their children are Jennifer Rebecca, Lisa Marie, and Brian Lenieu Carter.

 

Hazel Bagley Carter was the first woman in Georgia to receive a license as a mortician, served for ten years as a member of the Hinesville City Council, and in 1959 was the first woman in Georgia to be elected to a board of county commissioners. She was vice chairman of the Liberty County Board of Commissioners for 16 years until she became chairman of the commission in 1985.
