Caswell (Family)

The genealogy of these families extends back to Richard Caswell of Fayetteville, North Caro­lina, who married Mary McElwain in 1831, was the first governor of North Carolina, and a delegate to the Continental Congress. Martin James Caswell migrated from Kingston, North Carolina, to Bulloch County, Georgia, and married Elizabeth Martin of Liberty County. Their son, Martin Me­Elwain Caswell (1778-1842) migrated from Bulloch County to the upper part of Liberty County and married Ellender Darsey (1806-1870). Their son, James McElwain (1837-1920) was first sergeant of the Liberty Guards (Company D, Fifth Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Cavalry) during the Civil War. He married Clementine Elizabeth Martin, daughter of Angus and Margaret Daniel Martin. Their children were Raymond A. Caswell, James McElwain Caswell Jr., John B. Caswell, Enoch H. Caswell, Margaret Eula Lee Caswell, Daniel Booth Caswell, Mary Elizabeth Caswell, Ellender Caswell, Thomas Edgar Caswell, Adeline Jannette Caswell, Benjamin Darsey Caswell, and Susan Isabella Caswell. Thomas Edgar Caswell married Florence Eva Lee, daughter of Henry Stafford and Delilah Clark Best Lee of Screven County, Georgia, and their surviving children were Paul Edward Caswell and Inez Caswell (see Paul H. Sikes in this appendix).

Paul Edward Caswell married Estelle Elizabeth Hendry, daughter of Charles West and Flossie Leola Brewer of Liberty County, and they have one child, Charles Thomas Caswell. He mar­ried Josephine Smith, daughter of James Edward and Char­lotte Audrey Smith of Macon, Georgia, and they have one child, Usa Lee Caswell. Enoch H. (“Nuck”) Caswell (1863- 1948) married his first cousin, Ellen Long, daughter of Robert and Mary Ellen Caswell Long of the 16th Militia District, and they had no children. Mary Elizabeth (“Mamie”) Caswell, born in 1869, married F.D. Brinson in 1897. She died in 1932. Margaret Eula Lee Caswell, born in 1866, married Henry Carlos Laing in 1886, son of Angus Martin and Jane E. Martin Laing, and their children were James Angus Laing, Flossie Laing, Margaret Lee Laing, Anne Maude Laing, Mary Elizabeth Laing, Roland Benjamin Laing, Mary Jane Laing, and Sarah Ruth Laing. Susan Isa­bella Caswell married Oliver Capers Darsey (see his sketch in this appendix.)
