Cost of Living
Chinese Sand Pear Trees, introduced to Liberty County in 1850, provided another money crop for local farmers in the early years of the twentieth century. The fruit was shipped to Northern markets for sale and provided money for such extras as clothes and books for the children during the coming school year. A clothing store in Savannah sold men’s overalls with extra suspenders for 33 cents, work shirts for nine cents, and dress shirts for 33 cents. Boys suits were 98 cents and ladies coats $4.50.
