Elliott, John III (1773-1827)

Elliott, John III (1773-1827) – Grandson of John Elliott, one of the earliest settlers of Liberty County, and son of Colonel John Elliott. He married Esther Dunwody, daughter of James Dunwody , a Liberty County physician, on October 1, 1795. After she died he married Martha Stewart, daughter of Brigadier General Daniel Stewart. He was a U.S. senator from 1819 to 1825. Fifteen years before the Civil War un­known persons broke open his grave in Midway Church ceme­tery and took his skull. It was thought the skull was used in voo doo practices along the coast. It was recovered and returned to its rightful place.
