Hodges, William Clinton (1885-1965)

Born in Liberty County, son of John Gideon and Sarah Eugenia Wheeler Hodges, grandson of Jacob and Martha Flowers Howard, great-grandson of George Howard, who migrated from South Carolina to Liberty County in 1812. and great-great-grandson of John Howard, an Englishman who served under General Edward Braddock, commander-in-chief of British forces in North America, when he was fatally wounded during his disastrous battle with Continental Army troops at Fort Duquesne, on site of the present-day Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. One of the Continental Army officers who defended Fort Duquesne was George Washington of Virginia.

William Clinton Hodges graduated from Mercer University at Macon, Georgia, in 1910 with an LLB degree. He married Anne Varina Worsham, daughter of Charles Eugene and Laura Eugenia Worsham. Their only child was Quinton Hodges. William Clinton Hodges was a member of Hinesville Lodge No. 271, Free and Accepted Masons, for 29 years, 19 years of which he was its secretary. He was a member of the Liber­ty County Board of Commissioners from 1913 to 1914, attorney for Liberty County from 1915 to 1927, clerk of the Liberty County Board of Commissioners from 1915 to 1927, judge of the Hinesville City Court from 1916 to 1933, and a state representative from 1933 to 1937.
