Iverson, Alfred (1798-1873)
Some sources say this gentleman was born in Liberty County, while others say he was born in Burke County, Georgia. His parents, however, were Robert and Rebecca Iverson of Liberty County, who became members of Midway Church on july 2,1790. Rebecca Iverson was the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Jones of Liberty County, and her first marriage was to W.H. Cassels of Liberty County. Rebecca J ones, wife of Samuel Jones, was the daughter of William Baker Sr. of Liberty County. Alfred Iverson attended Sunbury Academy, and graduated from Princeton College in 1820. He became an attorney and practiced law in Columbus, Georgia. He was a presidential elector in 1844, and in 1846 was elected to the U.S. Congress. He was elected to the U.S. Senate on December 3, 1852, and was a long-time chairman of its claims committee. He was greatly admired by the people of Liberty County, some of whom named their newly born sons for him. He resigned from the U.S. Senate when Georgia seceded from the Union, entered the Confederate Army as colonel of a regiment in November 1862, and was later promoted to the rank of brigadier general. He made his home in Macon, Georgia, after the Civil War. At least one of his siblings, B.V. Iverson, resided in Macon. In 1900 some of his descendents were residing in Kirkwood and Kissimmee, Florida.
