Jones, John (1749-1779)
This gentleman from Charleston, South Carolina, married Mary Sharp (1753-1798), daughter of James and Mary Newton Sharp of Van Dyke Plantation in Liberty County, when she was 16. They migrated to Liberty County not long before the Revolutionary War, established a home at Sunbury, and a plantation on Colonels Island. Their children were Mary, John Jr., Millicent, Hannah, and Joseph Jones.
John Jones Sr. was a major in the Continental Army, and aide-de-camp to Major General Nathaniel Greene, during the Revolutionary War. He died in combat with British troops at Savannah, Georgia, on October 9, 1779.
