Mobley (Family)

James N. Mobley is the progenitor of all Mobley familes in Liberty County up to 1940. He was born in Effingham County, Georgia, in 1810, and married Elizabeth (“’Betsy”) Peacock of Liberty County in 1832, after which they resided in the Providence community.

 

Their children were Albert Mobley, who married Cynthia Scott, and their children were Eli, William Albert, William Washing­ton, Reedy Winfield, Marion Hiram, Gideon Bird, Alexander Wright, and Martin Albert Mobley;

 

Nancy Mobley, who married (1) John C. Barber, and their one child was Theodo­shia Barber, and (2) John Flowers, and their children were Lester and Shellie Flowers; Matilda Mobley, who married Elisha Smith, and their one child was Lambert Smith; Samuel E. Mobley;

 

William I. Mobley, who married Valson Driggers, and they had three children; Mary Elizabeth Mobley, who married (1) William E. Rogers, and (2) James Eli McFail Jr.; Lucy Ann Mobley, who married Thomas Cribbs, and their children were J.D., Maggie, and Annie Cribbs; James A. Mobley, who was married and whose children were Fannie and Arthur Mobley; Richmond D. Mobley, who married (1) Betsy Louie, and their children were James, Edward, and Willie Mobley, and (2) Margaret Montgomery, and their one child was Nannie Mobley;

 

Sarah Penelope Mobley, who married Patrick Dennison, and their children were Ellen, Addie, Samuel, Richmond, Evie, and Caroline Dennison; Lavinia Caroline Mobley, who married Henley Lewis, and their children were Madison, Edward, Verta, Lonnie, Rich­mond, Mattie, and Mamie Lewis; Hiram Jesse Mobley, who married (1) Rachel Dennison, and their children were Ursula Jane and Mary Leola (see Todd Families in this appendix), Maggie, Blanche, Bessie, and John Jesse Mobley, and (2) Emma Crumley; Martha Eveline Mobley, who married Wil­liam Townsend Groover (see Groover Families in this ap­pendix), and their children were James Charles and Willie Elva Groover;

 

George Madison Mobley, who married Cather­ine (“Katie”) Powell, and their children were Lonnie, James Witsel, Anguish Vernon, Walter David, Dora May, Minnie Carolyn, George Colister, and Mary Elizabeth Mobley, and Joseph Cephas Mobley, who married (1) Sallie Ann Watson, and their children were James Morris, Lena Lenora, Eva Olivia, William Irvin, Letisha, Joseph Dowse, Gertrude, Samuel Arlie, Pascal, Evona, Ila Mae (see Long Families in this appendix), Preston, and Victor Mobley, and (2) Lula Yarbrough, and they had one child.

 

James N. Mobley was a member of the Gum Branch Baptist Church. His sons, Albert, William I., Richmond D., and Hiram Jesse Mobley were all members of the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
